Parramore, Orlando, Florida
Although established in the 1800s, the community of Parramore has faced nothing but oppression and frustration.
University of Central Florida has progressively acquired land from Parramore for their “Creative Village” campus. With the latest installation being an 800,000 sqft tower, I interviewed members of the community to understand the programs they wanted to see in development. The gallery below begins with a set of posters, both of which feature portraits of an active community member, Rashida, and her vision for her community.
As this structure demolishes the communities only Recreation Center, I designed this project to be Civic based. Majority engagement of this building is drawn in from Parramore as opposed to University Students. The gallery continues to section cuts through the building from the communities perspective, to show the civic programming that envelops the structure.
Outdoor program was essential to this project.
Emphasizing the 1st occupation plane to create a mass amount of external programming; this outside plane features multiple moments or rest to promote engagement. The following plans are defined by the majority program on their level. Some of these programs include; a continuation of the Page15 Tutoring program, currently hosted by Parramore Kidz, at Orlando Recreation center, a civic hub for community engagement, and our residential floor plan, which is nestled between all other programs, representing how the residents of Parramore, the community, are the core of this structure.
Lighting was utilized in outdoor programs to promote circulation, way-finding, and create ambient lighting for several experiential environments.
Placing lights underneath benches, along floor planes, and behind signage helps engage the individual to navigate through the space, using constriction and expansion to define moments of rest from high foot traffic areas. Soft, artificial lighting is used to specify moments of calm against naturally lit areas designed to stimulated activity.
